Treatment of Phobia

Advancement in science and technology has come up with various treatments for phobias. The very first and the most essential step in curing phobias is personal motivation to expose oneself to the feared object and to tolerate the anxiety.

Some people have the motivation and dedication to tolerate the anxiety and cope up with the phobia of the feared object and some take help from therapist, psychiatrist and medicines to treat the symptoms.

Following are the most common and successful methods or therapies for managing fears and phobias :

Cognitive behavioral therapy : This therapy has two elements of treatment. One is the cognitive element that makes the person learn the thinking patterns and change their thoughts. The other element is the behavioral part that focuses on exposing the person to their feared object or situation, and enables them to change specific actions.

Exposure therapy : This therapy lays emphasis on the behavior of the person when they are exposed to the feared object. The person is gradually exposed to the feared object and is taught to tolerate the anxiety level that naturally falls down after few minutes.

Counseling : It is also called supportive psychotherapy. This therapy involves discussion and counseling. Some people discuss the ways they had adopted to fight phobias and alter the lifestyle for a better living. This discussion might prove to be useful to some of the people suffering from similar fears and they might adopt the same methods for curing.

Relaxation training : This includes many breathing exercises and muscular relaxation that tends to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Once the level of anxiety is reduced, these people are exposed to the feared objects that ultimately help them to tolerate the anxiety and cope up with the fear.

Medication : Apart from all the therapies and methods, there are some medicines that have proved to be successful in treating the symptoms of phobia. Medicines like benzodiazepines and beta-blockers are often used to ease the symptoms but are not enough to effectively treat phobias.
