Geliophobia is an overwhelming, irrational fear of laughter and being around others who laugh. The gellophobic individual may fear that they will laugh or smile at inapporapriate times. Some people coping with this phobia may find jokes, comedies and funny situations or people a source of anxiety. Geliophobic indiduals may fear laughter, in general, may be intensely fearful of their own laughter or may fear the laughter ofspecific people Geliophobia is the fear of laughter the origin of the word comes from gelo which is greek meaning laugh and phobia is Greek meaning fear geliophobia is considered to be a speicif phobia.Geliophobia is an abnormal, irrational fear of laughter. it is unknown why a person develops this fear, but it is possible that an embarrassin sitation may have hapened in which a person was laughed at by their peers.
As is the case with all phobias, the person impacted by geliophobai has experienced a trauma at some time in their ilfe. That traumatic event then becomes robotically and consistently related to laughter. Geliphobia can be caused by embarrassment from laughing at an inappropriate time, being mistreated and made fun of, or from uncorrected orthodontic problems.

What Causes Geliophobia?

As is the case with all phobias, the person impacted by geliophobia has experienced a trauma at some time in their life. That traumatic event then become automatically and consistently associated with laughter.
The person dealing with geliophobia may have uncorrected orthodontic problems that cause personal embarrassment.

 

Symptoms :-

The symptoms of geliophobai are individual and will vary from person to person. Some people when confronted with their fear of laughter may begin to perspire, feel slightly uncomfortable or become nauseated. At the opposite end of the spectrum, other people are so severely compromised by this phobia. That they may experience paralyzing anxiety panic attacks. the symptoms are A dry mouth, heart palpitations, umbness, heightened senses breathlessness, feeling dizzy, muscle tension, hyperventilation, trembling, rapid heartbeat, feeling out of control feeling trapped and unable to escape, intense feeling of impending disaster.

 

Treatment :-

When the fear of laughter becomes intense enough to disrupt an individual's ability to function, there are a number of ways to treat geliophobia. Exposure therapy, hypnotherapy, congnitive behavioral therapy, in cases of geliophobai anti anxiety medication can be prescribed.

Cognitive behavioral treatments:-

Exposure treatment can provide lasting relief to the majority of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Disappearance of residual and subclinical agoraphobic avoidance, and not simply of panic attacks, should be the aim of exposure therapy.

Cognitive restructuring has also proved useful in treating agoraphobia. This treatment involves coaching a participant through a diagnostic discussion, with the intent of substituting irrational, counterproductive beliefs with more factual and beneficial ones.
