Catoptrophobia is know as Eisoptrophobia derived from the Greek eis (into) and optikos(vision, image,sight) it means an abnormal and persistent fear of mirrors. This fear could have developed in the early histroy, when people used to use ponds and still waters as mirrors or looking glasses. People belived the images they saw in the water were their souls looking back at them and it frighten them. This practice lead to catoptromancy (mirror divination), whichh is means of self-reflection that enables the person to delve deep into the psyche to find understanding and resolve.
Catoptrophobia is a special kind of fear in which people start fearing looking into mirros. They fear from looking straight eye to eye in large mirrors specially the body length or larger mirrors. The people suffering from catoptrophobia avoid passing in front of mirrors. They also avoid seeing themselves in these mirrors, it is still under research that whether the fear is from the mirros or from the image of the person suffering from phobia reflected in the mirrors. irrational and exaggerated fear of mirrors or of seeing oneself in mirror is termed as catoptrophobia this irration fear is based on superstitions.
What are the causes?
It is generally accepted that phobias arise from a combination of external events (i.e. traumatic events) and internal predispositions (i.e. heredity or genetics). Many specific phobias can be traced back to a specific triggering event, usually a traumatic experience at an early age. Social phobias and agoraphobia have more complex causes that are not entirely known at this time. It is believed that heredity, genetics, and brain chemistry combine with life-experiences to play a major role in the development of phobias.
Symptoms:-
Catoptrophobia is characterised by individuals suffering from shortness of breath, heavy breath, sweating, anxiety, etc. Staying away from mirror is something which cannot be avoided, hence it is important for the person to think about the possible treatment options available from the cure of Catoptrophobia.
